Khayelihle Children’s Village is located on a 270-acre farm 12 miles from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
The staple food for Zimbabweans is mealie meal (cornmeal) made from maize (corn). This is planted in the fields when the rainfall is sufficient. However, in the past few years there has been a drought.
The farm also has a three acre fenced irrigated garden where vegetables and maize can be planted and protected from the farm animals. Vegetables include spinach, chomoullier (rape), carrots, onions, tomatoes, garlic, cabbage, peas, and other seasonal vegetables.
There are thirty five cattle on the KCV farm. Some are beef cattle
and some are dairy cattle. The dairy herd of Freisland (Holstein) cattle provides milk for the children and some to sell locally. KCV also has 25 sheep on the farm which
provide meat for the children.
When the availability of feedstocks allow, chickens are grown for the consumption of the children.
An orchard is being planted to provide fruit for the children. |
